Indian Aviation Faces Headwinds
According to Sydney-based consultancy Centre for Aviation (CAPA), Indian airlines are expected to post combined losses of up to $1.9 billion this financial year led by full-service carriers Air India and Jet Airways. Even low-cost carrier IndiGo, the country's largest airline in terms of passengers carried and fleet size, reported its first ever loss in September reported AINonline 23 November.
Indian Carriers Fly Most Empty Seats In 19 Months
Bloomberg reported 22 November Seat occupancy of airlines in the world’s fastest-growing aviation market fell to its lowest in 19 months because of excess supply and a delayed festival season. The average passenger load factor—the percentage of seats filled—fell to 83 percent in October, according to data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.
IndiGo to charge for all web check-ins
In a change of policy IndiGo said it will charge for all seats from passengers for web check-in. IndiGo is following the tend of global LCC’s to drive increased revenues.IndiGo will now charge Rs 800 more for the web check-in of a first-row seat, according to its revised charges and cancellations policy. A non-reclining seat in row 12, which is next to the emergency exit, will cost an additional Rs 600 when selected online. A middle seat in the last row will cost Rs 100 more.
Kerala Signs MoU With Airbus Bizlab, To Get New Innovation Centre
The Kerala state government signed a memorandum of understanding with Airbus BizLab to open a state-of-the-art innovation centre. This centre will be the nodal body for planning and executing all the activities to help start-ups. Airbus BizLab will also provide support and mentoring for start-ups in Kerala and conduct regular workshops and discussions with experts from the aerospace and defence sectors.
SriLankan Airlines plans to fly to more destinations in India
SriLankan Airlines plans to connect more Indian cities with Colombo as India is an important market for the carrier. The airline operates 122 flights every week from 13 destinations in India. “India will be an important market for expansion for the airline. We plan to fly to more destinations (in India),” SriLankan Airlines’ Manager (North India) Chinthaka Weerasinghe said.
