Boeing, EL AL Israel Airlines Celebrate Delivery of First 787 Dreamliner Boeing , EL AL Israel Airlines and Air Lease Corporation are celebrated the delivery of the carrier's first Boeing 787 Dreamliner on 23 August. EL AL leased the airplane through an agreement with Air Lease Corporation. The 787-9 touched down in Tel Aviv today following a nonstop, 6,746 mile (10,856 km.) delivery flight from Paine Field. Boeing, Japan Investment Adviser Finalize Order for 10 737 MAX 8 Airplanes Boeing and Tokyo-based Japan Investment Adviser Co., Ltd., (JIA) finalized an order for 10 Boeing 737 MAX 8s airplanes, valued at $1.12 billion at current list prices. The order was previously announced as a commitment at the 2017 Paris Air Show in June. The new 737 MAX 8s are the first directly purchased airplanes for JIA and will help bolster the lessor's growing fleet of next-generation aircraft. Condor adds third Austin-Frankfurt flight for Summer 2018 Condor's 2018 schedule will see nonstop flights between Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) and Frankfurt, Germany (FRA) increase to three times a week from twice weekly. Condor's nonstop flights to Frankfurt give travelers in Central Texas access to more than one hundred destinations in Europe. Icelandair Connects Cleveland to Europe Icelandair announced 25 August their newest North American gateway: Cleveland, Ohio. Non-stop service to Keflavik, Iceland will launch in May 2018 with four flights a week. Cleveland will be Icelandair’s 19th gateway in North-America. With a population of 2.2 million inhabitants, the city has a vast industrial history and is home to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Sports enthusiasts will also recognize Cleveland’s basketball team, the Cavaliers, led by one of the brightest stars of the NBA, LeBron James. Major US Airlines Face Increasing Trans-Atlantic Competition Increased competition in the trans-Atlantic flight market is putting major pressure on U.S. airlines. Bloomberg reported this week American Airlines Group experienced a 9.1 percent drop in trans-Atlantic fares, the biggest decline since the end of the recession in 2009. And American wasn’t alone, according to the report. Delta also recorded a downturn. The reductions come as European budget carriers, such as Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA and Iceland’s Wow Air, turn up the heat by adding more flights and entering new American markets. SkyWest Airlines Selects WRWA for Newest Maintenance Facility SkyWest Airlines announced 25 August the selection of Will Rogers World Airport (WRWA) as the location for its newest maintenance facility. The new, 135,000 square foot maintenance facility will accommodate up to nine regional aircraft and will support overnight maintenance for its four major airline partners. Construction began in July 2017 and the facility is expected to be open for operations in summer 2018. Southwest Airlines Announces Leadership Change Southwest Airlines announced 25 August the promotion of Ryan Martinez to Managing Director Investor Relations, effective Sept. 11. Martinez began his Southwest career in Investor Relations in 2006, where he spent seven years. Since that time, he has held many leadership roles within the Finance Department, most recently as a Senior Director in Corporate Planning and Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A).
